près les succès retentissant des deux volumes d’ « Agnus Dei », Edward Higginbottom, à la tête de l’Academy of Ancient Music et du Choir of New College Oxford, nous donne à entendre pour la première fois au disque, la version de 1751 du Messie de Haendel, avec comme solistes des sopranos garçons. Ce premier enregistrement mondial permet de redécouvrir, sous une nouvelle lumière, cette œuvre majeure du répertoire baroque.
    Sans aucun doute la plus célèbre œuvre du compositeur, Le Messie n’a jamais quitté le répertoire. Interprété au XIXe siècle avec des effectifs de plus en plus impressionnants et suivant la réorchestration de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, cet oratorio où le chœur est le principal protagoniste, fit l’objet de nombreuses adaptations également du vivant de Haendel.
    Si la création de cet oratorio à Dublin en 1742 connut un énorme succès, le public britannique s’avéra quant à lui bien plus froid. Une cabale londonienne en troubla même les premières exécutions. Ce n’est qu’à partir des années 1750 que Le Messie s’imposa. Haendel en présentera en 1751 une nouvelle version lors de concerts donnés le 18 avril au Théâtre de Covent Garden et le 16 mai à la Chapelle du Foundling Hospital. Cette version, qui remporta un vif succès, se caractérisait avant tout par l’intervention de jeunes chantres de la Chapelle Royale de Londres, non seulement dans les chœurs, mais aussi dans certaines parties solistes. C’est ce Messie de 1751 que Edward Higginbottom à la tête de l’Academy of Ancient Music et le Choir of New College Oxford nous permettent de découvrir dans ce premier enregistrement mondial de cette rare version londonienne, dans une qualité orchestrale et vocale parfaite.
