u cœur de la production musicale de Gerald Finzi, on trouve la mélodie. Enfin, « mélodie »… ce terme français, sensé représenter la contrepartie gauloise du Lied allemand, ne caractérise guère le Song anglais, une forme tout à fait spécifique, alliant la richissime poésie lyrique anglaise – en l’occurrence celle de Thomas Hardy –, les accents empruntés au fonds de la musique folklorique anglo-gaélico-saxonno-britannique, et sa propre vision musicale si intimement « entre-deux-guerres », puisque ces Songs appartiennent pus ou moins à la fin de cette époque.
    Inutile de chercher chez Finzi des approches modernistes : il a suivi un trajet plus classique et s’apparente à la mouvance de Vaughan Williams ou de Elgar plutôt qu’à celle de Britten ou Tippett – car ces trois musiciens appartiennent plus ou moins à la même génération : Finzi 1901, Tippett 1905, Britten 1913. Mais leurs routes musicales sont parties au gré de la rose des vents…
