crire un opéra contemporain sur le sujet de Boule de Suif d’après Maupassant est une tâche délicate, dont le compositeur états-unien Stephen Hartke s’est acquitté avec, dois-je dire, génie. Pour en souligner le livret scabreux et assez terrible dont il est l’auteur, Hartke compose une musique puissante, à la fois légère et pénétrante, profondément émouvante, que certains fils musicaux relient au dernier Britten. Par ailleurs, sa très large expérience dans le milieu vocal lui donne tous les éléments pour écrire de manière à ce que « ça sonne bien » ; ainsi les caractères de chaque personnage sont soulignés par un idiome musical spécifique, reconnaissable, tel un Leitmotiv non pas mélodique mais stylistique. L’orchestration de Hartke fait parfaitement usage de l’ensemble assez éclectique, tour à tour violent et doucement résigné.
    Cet ouvrage, parfaitement inconnu du public français, mérite absolument d’être monté sur les scènes françaises, ne serait-ce que par le sujet tiré de Maupassant bien sûr, mais surtout pour la simple raison que c’est un véritable chef-d’œuvre de l’opéra contemporain, et de la musique nord-américaine qui se libère enfin de l’emprise du jazz et du crossover qui ont teinté tant de générations de compositeurs de cette partie du monde.
    Saluons donc le travail remarquable du chef d’orchestre Stewart Robertson, directeur musical du Festival de Glimmerglass, qui offre des productions décapantes et novatrices.
