mar Khayâm (de son nom complet Ghiyath ed-din Abdoul Fath Omar Ibn Ibrahim al-Khayyām Nishabouri, 1048-1131) était un poète, astronome et mathématicien perse dont certains poèmes (ou quatrains) furent traduits à l’époque victorienne par Edward Fitzgerald. On lui doit également un traité sur les équations cubiques, ainsi qu’un calcul de la longueur de l’année d’une remarquable exactitude (365,24219 jours !).
    Entre 1907 et 1910, Edward Bantock composa, d’après certains quatrains, une symphonie chorale, vocale et symphonique d’une beauté stupéfiante et d’une modernité de tous les instants. D’aucuns n’hésiteraient pas à l’accuser d’avoir pillé Hollywood, si ce n’est qu’en 1910, Hollywood comptait quelques centaines d’habitants et strictement pas un seul studio de cinéma.
    Bantock évite soigneusement de se fourvoyer dans une quelconque évocation musicale du Moyen-Orient, ou du moins le fait-il dans le même esprit que Mahler évoquait la Chine dans le Chant de la Terre ; le résultat est une œuvre grandiose, géniale, déroutante, au souffle immense, dans une orchestration foisonnante et scintillante annonciatrice de bien des sonorités plus tardives.
    Ne laissez surtout pas passer cette occasion d’élargir votre panthéon personnel de la grande musique britannique, d’autant qu’il s’agit de la première discographique de Oman Khayyam.
