le charme intemporel des enregistrements d’Alfred Deller… Ils n’ont pas pris une ride, malgré leurs quatre ou cinq décennies d’âge. Sans doute quelques puristes de la chose ancienne estimeront qu’il ne faut pas faire ceci, ni cela, ni chanter ainsi, ni tenir les notes comme ça, ni vibrer de la sorte, tant pis pour eux, ils se privent d’un plaisir ineffable. On ne sait pas à quel CD se vouer pour découvrir les plus belles choses : le Deller Consort, qui chante a capella hormis dans un Monteverdi (accompagné d’un ensemble de cordes), explore le monde des madrigaux amoureux doux-amers de la Renaissance française, italienne et anglaise, avec une petite incursion dans le Moyen-Âge tardif de Josquin Desprez.
Cette lecture, ni « ancienne » ni « moderne », semble tout simplement hors du temps, comme si elle s’adressait à des œuvres écrites voici cinq cent ans ou vingt minutes, peu importe. Deller et ses acolytes ont enregistré tant de madrigaux en tout genre, donné tant de concerts de madrigaux, que le genre a fini par leur coller à la peau comme une véritable seconde nature. Pour ceux qui douteraient des capacités vocales de tel ou tel membre de l’ensemble, il suffira d’écouter les trois Gesualdo choisis parmi les plus tardifs, à la limite de l’atonalité, avec des enchaînements dignes des compositeurs les plus modernes – voire plus difficiles encore, car il s’agit d’enchaîner juste des accords qui s’opposent violemment ! Extraordinaire.
