hhhhh, le charme insondable de la subtile voix d’Alfred Deller… Et pourtant, j’ai rencontré des mélomanes sincères qui n’aimaient pas : j’avoue avoir du mal à comprendre, mais de gustibus non est disputandum. A leur sortie voici plusieurs décennies, ces enregistrements représentaient une sorte de révolution : on chantait Bach ou Haendel sans s’appuyer sur un karajanesque paquebot orchestral, les voix s’allégeaient, les instruments commençaient sérieusement à épurer leur jeu des traditions romantiques, et naturellement, Deller (1912–1979) cassait la baraque avec sa voix inouïe de contreténor.

    A ce sujet, il court une anecdote – si non è vero, è ben trovato – d’une dame française qui s’exclama devant Deller « Monsieur, vous êtes eunuque », ce à quoi l’imperturbable et flegmatique britannique aurait répondu « Vous voulez sans doute dire ‘unique’, Madame ». Il faut avouer que le règne des castrats n’avait été officiellement aboli par le Vatican qu’en 1903, des personnes peu averties pouvaient donc n’être pas au courant que le bistouri avait été rangé depuis une cinquantaine d’années.

    Deller et ses acolytes – parmi lesquels Harnoncourt et Leonhardt à leurs débuts – nous proposent un large éventail de Haendel et de Bach, suivi de plusieurs CD de musique élisabéthaine : non comment, votre serviteur trouve ça absolument magnifique. A l’attention des détracteurs des « baroqueux » : la musicologie de l’époque n’avait pas encore imposé certaines pratiques quelque peu extrêmes, voire dogmatiques des années 70 et 80 (vibrato interdit, cordes-grattouillis-raclouillage, voix blanches, attaques douteuses…) qui ont d’ailleurs largement disparu de nos jours. Par conséquent, vous ne risquez rien, hormis une excellente surprise !
