l ne faut surtout pas oublier qu’Alfred Deller (1912 – 1979), malgré la modernité de son propos musical, débuta sa carrière dans les années 40 ! A cette époque, le public ne faisait peut-être pas trop la différence entre un contreténor et un castrat : une dame française ne s’est-elle pas exclamé devant Deller « Monsieur, vous êtes eunuque », ce à quoi le facétieux Deller (qui, tout eunuque qu’il n’était pas, n’engendra pas moins plusieurs enfants) répondit : « Madame, vous voulez certainement dire que je suis unique ».
    Le célèbre Deller Consort fut fondé en 1948, et les enregistrements que l’on nous propose ici datent des années 1955 – 1960, en quelque sorte l’enfance de la nouvelle vague des musiciens à l’ancienne. Pas bégueule, Deller n’hésita pas à se plonger dans le monde fascinant de la chanson folklorique – signée Purcell pour les anciennes, Vaughan Williams pour les plus récentes, ainsi que des dizaines de pièces anonymes et traditionnelles – qu’il nous donne ici avec grand art. Naturellement, les textes ne sont pas à laisser entre toutes les mains, en particulier les plus chastes mimines : Once, twice, thrice de Purcell énonce avec le plus grand sérieux contrapuntique « So kiss my arse, kiss my arse, kiss my arse, disdainful sow », entre autres de la même imagination.
    Franchement, voici sept CD pleins de beautés, de redécouvertes, qui ont si longtemps manqué sur le marché. Superbe réédition ; les textes complets des 33-tours sont reproduits sur un CD-rom inclus.
