ntre le 23 février et le 12 mars 1967, le violoncelliste soviétique Rostropovitch donna, à Carnegie Hall, une série de concerts que l’on ne peut que qualifier de marathon : une trentaine des plus grands concertos du répertoire, dont plusieurs furent écrits pour lui. Le présent coffret en propose vingt et un, on peut imaginer que les neuf autres présentaient quelques imperfections, n’ont pas été enregistrés ou le furent de manière peu satisfaisante : aucune explication n’est offerte. Mais quand même… quel bonhomme, quelle vitalité, quelle énergie !

    Les œuvres les plus classiques étant bien représentées dans la discographie du violoncelliste, l’auditeur concentrera sans doute son attention sur les raretés que sont la partita de Tchaïkovski – Boris Tchaïkovski, pas l’autre – pour violoncelle, clavecin, piano, guitare électrique et percussion (!), la Suite de Youri Levitine, le Concerto de Lukas Foss qui était alors créé, le Khrennikov ou naturellement la merveilleuse Symphonie concertante de Britten.

     Rostropovitch est ici brillamment accompagné par Rojdestvenski dirigeant le London Symphony Orchestra. Bonnes prises de son, et surtout, c’est du live avec toute la tension, la vie, l’immédiateté que cela implique. Un coffret à ne pas laisser passer !
