ntre Wagner, Tchaïkovski, Strauss et les influences celtiques, entre l’Orient (on songe au génial Omar Khayyám, à écouter d’urgence) et la Grèce antique, Sir Granville Bantock aura tété à d’innombrables sources d’inspiration pour écrire ses magnifiques œuvres symphoniques, tragiquement méconnues en France.
    En voici donc six CD bourrés jusqu’à l’os, à découvrir sans plus attendre. Entre 1990 et 2003, Vernon Handley et le Royal Philharmonic se sont attelés à faire découvrir l’œuvre de cet étonnant outsider, trop longtemps considéré comme trop « classique » pour avoir droit au chapitre. Heureusement, de nos jours, ces classicismes reviennent en faveur, dès lors que la musique en vaut la chandelle. Et celle de Bantock vaut son pesant d’or, maintenant que la notion de « démodé » a perdu toute signification soixante ans après sa disparition ; d’aucuns penseront entendre Hollywood dans cette richissime orchestration, mais il faut considérer que lorsque Bantock écrivit ces œuvres, Hollywood n’était qu’un village paumé dans les collines...
    Surprises – bonnes, excellentes, voire stupéfiantes – garanties. Gageons que d’ici peu, les orchestres français voudront bien se pencher sur l’héritage de cet étonnant monsieur. Voilà un travail magistral de redécouverte de la part de Vernon Handley à la tête d’un Royal Philharmonic enflammé.
