urcell a écrit rien moins que 87 airs séculiers. À la différence de la plupart de ses œuvres religieuses ou de ses opéras – dont les textes vont du bon au carrément minable –, le compositeur a choisi les textes pour leur potentiel musical, laissant vraiment libre cours à sa fantastique capacité d’illustration sonore des mots. À son époque, personne mieux que lui n’avait autant de flair mélodique et rythmique pour exprimer l’énergie de la langue anglaise.
