Gustav Holst

hapeaux bas, mesdames et messieurs : voici deux œuvres de génie. De Holst, on se borne souvent à ne connaître que Les planètes (et encore, pas toutes... surtout Mars, qui suffit aux amateurs de dzim-boum-boum), recueil certes splendide, mais loin d'être aussi évolué que la Fantaisie chorale et la Symphonie chorale. Ne serait-ce que pas son effectif inhabituel et particulièrement efficace — soprano solo, chœur, orgue, cuivres, percussion et cordes —, la Fantaisie est un fabuleux morceau de bravoure orchestral, dans un style qui est entièrement propre au compositeur : de par son langage harmonique, contrapuntique, tonal, Holst ne se compare à aucun autre musicien de son époque. La Symphonie, elle, mériterait également d’entrer au répertoire de tout orchestre qui se respecte. Dommage que les musiciens d’outre-Manche ne soient pas réellement, en France, au goût du jour. Mais leur temps viendra.
