n ne vous fera pas l’insulte de vous siffler le chœur le plus connu du Messie de Händel ; cela dit, le reste de l’œuvre est étonnamment méconnu, du moins en France. Car dans les pays anglo-saxons, il n’est pas une seconde de décembre où l’on ne joue pas l’ouvrage, ne serait-ce qu’en raison de l’immense tradition chorale anglo-saxonne ; dès le Premier avent, c’est parti pour des Alléluia à tous les coins de rue, dans les ascenseurs, les parkings, les abattoirs municipaux, les centrales nucléaires et les ateliers de réparation de moissonneuses-batteuses… Le plus marrant, c’est que l’œuvre est initialement conçue pour le Carême, ou pour la période de Pâques.

    Le Messie ayant été donné des dizaines de fois sous la direction de Händel, dans des lieux divers et variés, avec des chanteurs d’hiver et parfois avariés, on ne s’étonnera pas qu’il adaptait souvent la partition aux forces en présence, rajoutant ici, retranchant là, transposant, bref, modifiant la partition pour le mieux – ou, du moins, pour le moins pire. Ainsi, il n’existe pas de version définitive et arrêtée, de sorte que les musiciens de nos jours doivent un peu préparer leur propre popote avec le surcroît de matériau disponible.

    Roy Goodman a choisi « la version de 1750 légèrement modifiée avec adjonction de quelques variantes s’approchant de la version de 1752 », pour notre plus grand plaisir, à la tête de l’exemplaire ensemble Polyphony (sachant que l’œuvre compte 40% de morceaux choraux, mieux vaut avoir affaire aux meilleurs) et le superbe Britten Sinfonia. Lecture à l’ancienne, mais émotion d’aujourd’hui.
