Voici une version carrément légendaire, qui ne manquera pas de diviser les puristes d’un côté et les passionnés d’autre part. Les puristes pourront ne pas trop aimer le clavecin cuvée 1948, le diapason résolument réglé à 440Hz, et les forces instrumentales plutôt symphoniques, sans parler du fait que c’est chanté… en anglais. Les passionnés continueront à être ravagés d’émotion par la voix de Kathleen Ferrier et le sentiment d’abyssal recueillement de cette vision qui, si elle n’est peut-être pas « authentique », est d’une profondeur sans égal. Et d’une authenticité d’intention qui vaut toutes les autres authenticités historiques.

    Notez que c’est là la première réédition en CD de la version complète de cet enregistrement de 1947/48, là où à l’époque le coffret de 21 énormes 78-tours ne comptait que les 2/3 de l’œuvre, et même l’édition plus tardive en vinyle restait incomplète : le magicien du son qu’est Mark Obert-Thorn a rassemblé toutes les sources existantes, toutes les matrices possibles, et a assemblé une version d’une parfaite cohérence sonore – alors que plusieurs enchaînements récitatifs-arias ont été enregistrés à une année d’intervalle, dans des lieux différents… miracle.
